Food security, climate change and global security

FAO summit: The European Commission President Barroso highlights the link between food security, climate change and global security.
opened today at the FAO summit in Rome European Commission President José Manuel Barroso will propose that food safety is established an early warning system based on scientific data. In his speech to the Heads of State and Government, President Barroso will draw attention to the link between food safety, and the fight against global climate change. The FAO summit will also attend the European Commissioner for Agriculture, Marian Fischer-Boel, and the development and humanitarian aid, Karel De Gucht. President Barroso said: "A world where a billion people are hungry is not only a stain on our collective consciousness, but also a growing threat to our world security. As the fight against climate change, including the fight against hunger can not wait: we have to halve world hunger by 2015, as provided by the Millennium Development Goals. And for the food security we need to create a global early warning system based on scientific data, similar to those introduced in the fight against climate change. This conference needs to address three important questions, which are interconnected: food security, climate change and biodiversity. These are important and difficult challenges, and I am determined to address them during the next mandate of the European Commission. "The participation of President Barroso at the FAO summit is consistent with the strong commitment of the European Commission in support of food security and the 's decision EU to increase aid to developing countries, which are also the first victims of climate change. Of all the members of FAO, the EU is by far the most important in terms of contributions to the budget. FAO was a major beneficiary of the food of one billion euro proposed dal presidente Barroso e approvato nel dicembre 2008 dal Consiglio dell’UE.
